|
|
According to a survey conducted by the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association, most young people cited economic factors for not owning a car. 30% siad that public transportation was more convenient. Even the people living in the suburban areas of big cities like Sapporo, Tokyo, Osaka prefer not to own a car because it is expensive to maintain it.
The reasons for not owning a car may be many. However, one thing is for sure, the phenomenon is an alarming sign for the Japanese export industry.

Generally speaking, manufacturers sponsor advertisers or bloggers or use other valuable resources to promote every new car they bring on the road. But it is often observed that, not all cars, like in every other industry, become popular among the intended buyers. Many factors could be attributed to this universal phenomenon.
- Lack of model-centric advertising
- Weak market positioning of the model (wrong combination of strengths & weaknesses)
- Strong internal & external competition
- Too radical or too bland car design
- Recent declining market trends
- Increasing gasoline prices worldwide
- Rise of baby boomers (who do not need bigger models anymore)
- Discounting trends for not-so-successful models
Any other suggestions? Tell me if you want to share one.
